USDA hardiness zones — plant guides by zone

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides North America into 13 zones based on the average annual minimum winter temperature. Each zone covers a 10°F band, and the lower the number, the colder the winter. Knowing your zone is the single most useful piece of information for choosing plants that will actually survive — and thrive — in your garden.

Zones 3 through 7 cover most of the continental United States and much of southern Canada. Zones 8 through 10 run across the southern US, Gulf Coast, and much of California. Zones 11 through 13 are tropical — South Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the lowest-lying Caribbean. Pick your zone below for a curated plant list, frost dates, and a month-by-month planting timeline.
